Extending to the south from Rully, the Mercurey vineyard is located on marl Limestone soils from geological formations of the Upper and Middle Jurassic, with a dominant of the latter, which appeal to the Pinot Noir grape variety.

This surname is common in western France. The first part of this word: “Cara” derives from the name caras/charas or “heap of stones”. The earth here, in fact, is stony and, at the top, a large meurger, or pile of stones that were removed and deposited at the edge of the plot, is still visible.
