This Grand Cru was first mentioned in 1508. The etymology is rather mysterious: for some, no doubt poets, the origin is Frankish and means "little marvel"; for others, more realistic and no doubt more observant, it is the very nature of the soil that is used to name it: "la Tricière", poor land.

This charming Grand Cru is located on the northernmost part of the Côte, in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin. The production areas of the Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin appellations are the same, and it is the Charmes-Chambertin appellation that is usually claimed; "In Burgundy, the word Charmes designates former common fields that were cultivated and then left to lie fallow". In Burgundy, "Charme" has the same meaning as "Chaume".

As early as the Middle Ages, the monks of Cîteaux began building this Clos, surrounded by dry-stone walls. It took them more than 2 centuries to build the Clos as we see it today. The demarcation of the Clos was completed in the 14th century, and the surrounding wall built in the 15th century. Today, 82 owners share the 50 hectares of this emblematic Burgundy Clos.

This climat and the lieu-dit of the same name are smaller than their neighboring "Clos des Grands Voyens", Voyen being derived from the Latin word Voie "path, road, way". The Chagny (Cersot) Roman road from Rully reached Mercurey near Clos Voyens. It then passed near Clos des Grands Voyens and climat Jamproye, and descended the hillside through the Chazeaux vineyards. All these climat names are linked to the passage of this road.

The Maranges vineyards (mainly Pinot Noir reds, with a few Chardonnay whites) form the link between Côte d'Or and Saône-et-Loire. It is in perfect harmony with Santenay, with which it shares several esteemed crus. The 1988 harvest saw
the birth of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Maranges, shared by the three villages of Cheilly-lès-Maranges, Décize-lès-Maranges and Sampigny- lès-Maranges. This AOC blossoms in a landscape of gentle
and character. Henri Vincenot, the great Burgundian writer, described this small country with its warm soul. What beautiful old winegrowers' houses! And what a picture for a painter!

The wine

Just south of the Côte de Beaune, on the border between Côte-d'Or and Saône-et-Loire, Santenay long divided its ambitions between wine and thermal waters. Today, the village is fully dedicated to Bacchus, forgetting that it was once called Santenay-les-Bains. Only the vagaries of departmental boundaries, set at the time of the French Revolution, have separated Santenay from Maranges. The vineyards, crossed by a gentle river, the Dheune, produce mainly red wines for laying down. "Les Cornières" takes its name from the corm trees that used to grow there. Cormier is the old name for the rowan tree in many regions. The tree bears tiny russet pears with a soft, sweet pulp, known as corms.

The Rully vineyard stretches for about four kilometers, from Chagny, where it includes several Climats, to the southern limit of the Rully commune, where it borders the Mercurey vineyard. This is a remarkable limestone terroir, with sufficient marl and clay for the Chardonnay grape variety to have found its ideal terroir. The red wines, in the minority, are soft and fruity, with a liveliness that underlines their exquisite minerality.

This is the name of the Climat and Le Clos du Roi, the name of the lieu-dit it comprises. In Burgundy, Clos du Roy or Clos du Roi are the former Clos of the Dukes of Burgundy. Clos du Roy in Chenôve was originally called "Le Clos du Duc". In Aloxe-Corton and Beaune, the two Climats Le Clos du Roi belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy. The same is true of Le Clos du Roy in Mercurey, which originally belonged to the du Montaigu family.

Extending Rully to the south, Mercurey's vineyards are planted on marl-limestone soils derived from geological formations of the Upper and Middle Jurassic, with the latter predominating, which is ideal for the Pinot noir grape variety. White wines, though a minority, are also highly sought-after. From terroirs of fine marl and clay, they are well-structured, full-bodied and generous, and stand out from the white wines of the southern Côte Chalonnaise. Here, we find a condensed terroir, bringing together the parent rocks of the Côte de Nuits and those of the Côte de Beaune, combined with a diversity of exposures and altitudes, making Mercurey the terroir offering the greatest diversity of expression in Burgundy.

Among the most famous Climats is "Clos de la Fortune". Its south-east exposure is excellent. The name of this Climat should be taken literally! It comes from the Latin FORTUNA, meaning "happy fortune, happiness, luck". The wall that can be seen above this Climat is undoubtedly the remnant of a wall from the site's fortified enclosure.

Bouzeron Les Trois is a blend of 3 parcels: "Les Clous", "La Tournelle" and "Les Cordères". The Bouzeron appellation was recognized in 1997 as one of Burgundy's Villages, and the AOP honors the grape variety that made it famous: Aligoté. The first vines were planted by the monks of Cluny Abbey in the 6th century, although the village has existed since antiquity. The name Bouzeron comes from "Boserontis Villa", which suggests that a Gallo-Roman estate was established here.
