Puligny-Montrachet, an emblematic Côte de Beaune wine

Written on 19/07/2021

One of Burgundy's best-known wines

A vineyard on the Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet comprises no fewer than 17 Climats classified as Premier Cru, almost exclusively white wines made from the Chardonnay grape. In fact, the production area for red wines is just 0.36 hectares, while that for white wines is 96.

Planted on brown limestone or clay-limestone soils, the vines of Puligny-Montrachet produce a white wine with a highly assertive personality known the world over.

The color of white wines has strong golden highlights, with occasional greenish halos. The color intensifies with age. The bouquet is also very full, combining hawthorn, ripe grapes, marzipan, green apple, hazelnut, lemongrass and amber.

On the palate, we find lactic aromas similar to butter or hot croissant, and more mineral flavors such as flint and honey. These blends create sublime harmony and concentration

For red wines, the color is a bright ruby when young, becoming deeper with age. On the nose, there are aromas of red berries such as redcurrant and raspberry, as well as blackcurrant and blackberry. As it ages, it becomes more musky, leathery and furry. This is a wine you should not hesitate to keep, as it will sublimate wonderfully after 4 or 5 years.

Food and wine pairings are obviously perfect with this kind of wine. The great aromatic complexity of the white makes it a perfect match for both delicate and rich dishes, such as poultry in sauce, foie gras, grilled sea fish or lobster. As for cheeses, Puligny-Montrachet goes well with goat's cheese, Brie de Meaux or Reblochon, all at a serving temperature of between 11 and 13 degrees.

The opulent, full-bodied structure of this red wine is a perfect match for roast pork and poultry or, on the cheese side, Comté cheese. Serving temperature: 14 to 16 degrees.
