What to serve on New Year's Eve?

Written on 12/27/2021

All the keys to a successful New Year's Day!

J-4. In four days' time, a large number of French people will be getting together to celebrate the end of the year. The end of the year will once again be marked by Covid-19, but it's still time toget together for a lovely evening.

Even if some decide to celebrate New Year's Eve at home, others are aficionados of the famousNew Year's Eve party, which is synonymous with celebration, joy, friendship, good food and good wine!

But what to serve for these festive meals? Here are a few tips for pairing your festive meals with the right wine.
First of all, to welcome your guests, go for champagne. A glass of champagne is the perfect way to kick off the evening.

For starters, several emblematic dishes can be proposed, each accompanied by a wine.

  • Oysters: to counter the salty, iodized taste of oysters, a dry wine such as a Chablis is ideal.

  • Smoked salmon: you'll need a wine that will counterbalance the fatty taste of the fish. For this, forget sweet wines that will be "mushy" on the palate, preferring a dry, slightly acidic white like a Puligny-Montrachet.

  • Caviar: if you're lucky enough to have caviar on the table, you can pair it with vodka, but not only. As with smoked salmon, a dry, mineral, slightly acidic white will do the trick.

  • Foie gras: unlike previous dishes, foie gras can be paired with slightly heavier, sweeter wines.

For the main course:

  • A seafood platter: once again, opt for dry whites

  • Poultry: a full-bodied, aromatic white wine like Meursault is a perfect match for its rather dry flesh.

For the cheese platter: red wines are the obvious choice

For dessert: a nice glass of champagne will do the trick, especially as dessert is often served at almost the same time as the 12 strokes of midnight ...
